A regional endemic confined to Banat (both in Romania and Serbia but only in the lower mountainous areas) and western Oltenia (here both in low altitude mountainous and hilly areas). There are indications of isolated populations occuring in Moldova (Iasi-Ruginoasa, Neamt Monastery) and Dobrogea (Nifon) but these seem to be quite old and may be a result of confusions with other spiny species of Cirsium with lanate / tomentose involucrum.

Beusnitei valley, not far from the confluence with Nera river, in the area of Cheile Nerei - Beusnita National Park, Anina Mountains, Caras-Severin county, August 2013.
